PROJECT AVANZANDO
A Collaborative Adult Education Initiative for Migrant and Seasonal Farm Workers,
led by Art, Research and Curriculum Associates, Inc.
What is Project Avanzando?
Project Avanzando is a collective educational effort designed to provide GED (High School Equivalency) instruction that is specifically tailored for seasonal agricultural workers and their eligible family members residing in the Eastern Los Angeles and Western San Bernardino Counties. The project enables them to successfully complete the program and enhance their career and life prospects. Project Avanzando also offers computer training, student support services, Transition to College, Life Skills Workshops, cost free childcare and transportation to eligible participants.
Who does Project Avanzando serve?
Our project is funded by the US Department of Education and serves Migrant and Seasonal farm workers who are older than 16 years of age. To qualify the participants must have been employed at least 75 days in agricultural work within the last two years. The worker's children (older than 16 years of age) also qualify to participate as students in Project Avanzando.
Who provides these educational services?
Project Avanzando is a project of Art, Research and Curriculum Associates, Inc. (ARC) a non-profit educational organization founded in 1977 to support schools, school districts and community efforts to improve educational excellence and opportunity for all students. ARC has forged a partnership with Rio Hondo Community College, the Los Angeles County Office of Education, the American GI Forum, the Hispanic Outreach Task Force (HOT), Whittier College, the City of Santa Fe Springs, the Boeing Company, and various academic and community organizations to educationally serve migrant and seasonal farm workers in our area of service.
When and where are Project Avanzando classes being offered?
Our GED preparation classes have been offered since January 2, 2001 at the Santa Fe Springs Neighborhood Center, 9255 South Pioneer Boulevard, Santa Fe Springs, California. The classes are held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Other classes are held in Rosemead at the Emma Shuey Elementary School and at the ReadyPac produce company in Irwindale. The classes are offered from September through June and students are welcome to inquire about beginning classes anytime during those months.
Who is eligible to receive free childcare and transportation?
Any student accepted into the program is eligible for these support services. However to provide safe and effective care the program can accept a maximum of two children per family between the ages of 3 and 12 years old only. For safety reasons the maximum number of children we can serve on any given day is 40 (forty). Childcare is provided at the Santa Fe Springs and Rosemead sites. Transportation to and from the Santa Fe Springs site classes are provided from designated points in the community where the majority of students reside.
Who works for the Project?
A Director, Administration Manager, Instruction Coordinator, Student Services Coordinator, Outreach and Public Education Consultant, Driver and six Instructors staff Project Avanzando.
How is Project Avanzando funded?
The project is funded by a grant from the Migrant Education Office of the US Department of Education. ARC is actively seeking service collaborations and additional funds that can expand the educational services offered to the community.
What other agencies are working with Project Avanzando?
Our project is a model of educational collaboration. Project Avanzando has a Community Advisory Board (CAB) that meets regularly to enrich and influence the general direction of our educational efforts. Our CAB members are a diverse group of committed community leaders from private industry, sister community agencies and educational institutions.
