ARC offers a variety of services to schools and communities that are consistent with our mission to promote educational excellence and equity for underserved students, families, and communities. All our services reflect the following three themes:

  1. improving academic achievement
  2. promoting equity
  3. improving race relations
  4. creating conditions for empowerment of underserved groups.

The following are our areas of expertise:

Academic Tutoring

Our academic tutoring program, ARC Connections, support students in kindergarten through eighth grade to improve math and reading/language arts understanding and skills. Our programs are characterized by careful assessment of each student, strong relationships with the child’s regular teachers and parents, clear learning plans adapted for each student, small groups formulated to foster student growth, multilingual/ multicultural staff, training and supervision by excellent and experienced teachers. These programs address the needs and build on the strengths of each and every student.

Youth Development

Our youth development programs include collaboration with schools and other community based agencies. We incorporate the principles of self awareness and articulating one’s own voice, listening actively and respectfully to others, critical thinking, leadership development, social skills development, continuing education and career exploration, community service and social action. Our youth development programs are powerful vehicles for educating and empowering youth within the context of their own interests, experiences and communities.

School Improvement

We have over twenty-five years of experience in working collaboratively with educators, educational leaders, schools and districts to develop programs and initiate reforms that make education more accessible and effective for under-served children and adult and their communities.

Professional Development

In our work with schools, we have developed and implemented many professional development activities for teachers, counselors, principals, paraprofessionals, and others. All are aimed toward long-term impact and capacity building for the schools and/or districts. In planning professional development activities, we engage the staff to reflect their needs, develop training and other activities that are appropriate for the needs, and utilize local expertise as a resource for the training.

Research and Evaluation

ARC is committed to using systematic forms of inquiry to learn how schools and community organizations can better meet the needs of students and families, especially those who have been traditionally underserved by the educational system. Most of our research ideas are generated by our quest for best practices in our direct services. Our research findings, in turn, guide our services.

Our program evaluation work is guided by the empowering evaluation model. We integrate the evaluation design into the clients work and involve our clients to utilize the evaluation findings to guide and improve their work.
