1977 |
ARC Associates incorporated as a California non-profit, based in Oakland, California. |
1977-80 |
A telephone line and a PO box established. |
1980 |
Received our first grant from the U.S. Department of Education (ED) to study bilingual education in the Chinese community. |
1980 |
Received a copyright for our bilingual curriculum from the Asian American Bilingual Center, and began publishing and disseminating the materials. |
1981 |
Received more support on research studies relating to the schooling and education of minority students. |
1984 |
Received support from ED to sponsor summer training for researchers interested in Asian and Pacific Islander education. |
1985 |
Received ED support and began 12 years of operating Bilingual Education Support Centers in California. |
1986 |
Collaborated with WestEd to operate the Equity Assistance Center. |
1987 |
Opened offices in Honolulu and Palau and began 10 years of operation of Bilingual Education Support Centers in the Pacific region. Offices closed in 1998. |
1990 |
The ARC research report, “Promoting the Success of Latino Language-Minority Students: An Exploratory Study of Six High Schools” was published in Harvard Educational Review. |
1994 |
Conducted the national commemorative symposium “Revisiting The Lau Decision: 20 Years After” which examined the lasting impact of the 1974 Supreme Court case. |
1997 |
With ED’s phasing out of support center programs and focus on direct school funding, ARC faced with 80% funding cut and began transitioning into a direct services provider. |
1998 |
Began new programs: School reform coaching, Computer Street Academy, Youth Together, Oakland Parents Together, among others. |
1999 |
The Journal of Negro Education published the “Leading for Diversity” special issue based on ARC’s research. |
2000 |
ARC became the fiscal sponsor of Pacific Islander Kie Assocaition (PIKA), a local group serving the Oakland Pacific Islander community. |
2000 |
Opened an office in Southern California to conduct GED programs for seasonal agricultural workers (Project Avanzando). |
2001 |
ARC began work to support Oakland charter schools through a two-year ED Grant. |
2002 |
Oakland Unified School District approved ARC’s charter to operate a charter school in Oakland. |
2003 |
Oakland Unity High School opened as an independent non-profit charter school. ARC provides administrative and development support for the school. |
2004 |
ARC’s afterschool tutoring program became a CA Title I SES provider. SES grew and became ARC’s largest program in 2007 (ARC Tutoring). |
2008 |
ARC research report, “Achievement testing for English Language Learners, ready or not?” published in the Education Policy Analysis Archives. |
2010 |
The Oakland Fund for Children and Youth approved the Healthy Heart Healthy Mind program, based on the need to improve academic outcomes and health education in Oakland's Pacific Islander community. |
2011 |
A new program, Deaf Plus, is approved to develop and run a day program for multiply disabled deaf adults. A 3-year grant awarded from the The Regional Center of the East Bay. |
