Our Work

ARC is dedicated to promoting educational excellence and equity for underserved students of diverse backgrounds. Our work focuses in two areas:

  • Assisting schools to better serve diverse learners
  • Creating conditions for the empowerment of youth, parents, and their community

The following are our ongoing programs:

Project Avanzando

http://www.arcassociates.org/avanzando/
(Spanish for advancing) provides GED instruction to seasonal agricultural workers and their families in Eastern Los Angeles County and Western San Bernardino County. A full array of support services is offered including personalized instruction in small groups and individualized tutoring, free transportation and on-site childcare, education and career counseling and mentoring, family counseling with special support for women, GED classes in Spanish, ESL instruction, Internet training and on-line option for GED study.

ARC Connections

http://www.arctutoring.org
is a reading and mathematics tutoring program designed to improve students skills at a rate faster than can be achieved in the daily classroom settings. This program has been selected by and being implemented in many underachieving schools in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles County.

Pacific Islander Kie Association (PIKA)

is a grassroots volunteer organization that advocates and promotes the empowerment of Pacific Islander families and youth through community organizing, youth leadership projects and education, and cultural and contemporary arts. PIKA members include Pan-Pacific parents, educators, artists and community organizers. Fine mat in Tongan is kie and in Samoan it is 'ie. The fine mat has extraordinary artistic, cultural, spiritual and monetary significance. PIKA chooses kie as its cultural symbol to represent the importance of weaving our diverse Pacific cultures without losing our identity and to unite Pacific peoples' traditions and values. Like the kie PIKA envisions becoming a strong foundation for Pacific Islander communities, where we can create lasting social change for our communities.
